I’m sitting at a café outside the Louvre in Paris, sipping tea between modeling appointments. That morning’s go-sees had been to Casharel, Kenzo and Elle Magazine.  In the afternoon I’d strut my stuff at Pierre Cardin and then drop my book off at Este Lauder--a rather typical day.

In restaurants and at the latest hot spots, four or five of us could easily procure the best table in the house--right up front and center where we could "see and be seen." Then we'd enjoy our pick of the menu on the house. At night clubs it was a given we'd be ushered to the front of the line and let in for free. To hop a flight to the other side of the world on a moment's notice for work became the norm.

I could recite my height, clothing and shoe size, and my eye and hair color in five different languages.

The glamorous life! Yet, more times than I could count I’d heard models say, “I just want to be normal,” while we were in the midst of being “transformed”--Cinderella style--by teams of makeup artists and stylists, or while slipping out of our sweatshirts and sneakers into $10,000 dresses and $750 heels.

They didn’t really want to be “normal”--what I realize now is they, like every other human being, were starving for meaning and depth in their lives. They, like so many people, including myself, were living a life of quiet desperation. Lives that look so good on the outside, yet because they lack authenticity, connectivity and purpose--in other words, Soul--leave us feeling a void within, an ever-present low-level angst that is unremitting, no matter how much we achieve. Most people opt to cover it up, or mute it with an excess of material possessions, food, alcohol, drugs, TV, sex or anything else labeled as “fun”, or they give up and simply fall into a functional paralysis, like so many models did. 

Can you relate to there types of feelings? What is the "small, still voice" inside of you prodding you towards, so that you can experience authentic fulfillment and joy? Do you know?

For many years my inner mantra was, “I am so sick and tired of being seen as just a body.” And then one cool autumn day it hit me like a bolt of lightening, “I’m not.”

I was killing time before an audition in a little out-of-the-way bookstore that I often frequented between modeling appointments. This time, shortly after I slipped inside, I spied a thick, navy blue book on a shelf across the room. Its pull on me was magnetic.

It was the classic spiritual text, A Course in Miracles.  I had heard of it before, but knew very little about it.  As I picked it up, it fell open to a lesson in the middle of the book, and I read, “I am not a body.  I am free for I am still as God created me.” I stood still and silent and closed my eyes, the thick blue book open in my hands, feeling that those words had been written just for me. 

At this point in time, the futility of living as a body couldn’t have been more blatant to me. More than anything on earth I longed to be free. Then and there, I vowed from the deepest core of my being, from well beneath all façade and illusion, “I will do this or die.”
